America has watched Britney Spears grow from an innocent schoolgirl in her debut video, “Baby One More Time,” to a constantly criticized, but nonetheless always popular, mother of two.

Britney Jean Spears was born on December 2, 1981, in Kentwood, Louisiana. She made her first national appearance on Star Search in 1990, at the age of eight. Spears then auditioned for the New Mickey Mouse Club, but the producers felt she was too young for the show. For the next three years, Britney studied at New York’s Professional Performing Arts School, appearing in commercials and an off-Broadway play.

In 1993, she auditioned for Mickey Mouse again and landed the role. The cast included Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Christina Aguilera, and Felicity’s Keri Russell. The show was cancelled in 1996, and Britney went back home. She returned to New York in 1998 and recorded a demo.

Her first single, “Baby One More Time,” was released late in 1998, and skyrocketed to the top of the charts. The album, Baby One More Time, dropped in January 1999, debuting at #1 on the Billboard 200 where it remained for six weeks. Britney received two Grammy nominations, won four Billboard Music Awards, and won Favorite Pop/Rock New Artist at the American Music Awards. The album sold 14 million copies in the U.S. and 25 million copies worldwide.

Britney’s second album, Oops!...I Did It Again was released in May 2000. It debuted at #1 and sold over 1.3 million copies its first week, breaking the previous record for one week sales of an album by a female artist. It stayed in the top three for seventeen weeks, and sold 10 million copies in the U.S. and 20 million copies worldwide.

Meanwhile, Britney and Justin Timberlake, with whom she had been secretly involved since 1998, began to go out together in public. The public couldn’t get enough of Britney, and her concerts were sold out. She also signed a lucrative deal to represent Pepsi.

Britney, Spears’s third album was released in 2001. In an attempt to present herself as more mature, she strayed from the formulaic pop hits that had propelled her to fame. Although the album debuted at #1, sales totaled only 4 million copies. In 2002, Spears made her movie debut in Crossroads. The movie was a flop, and this disappointment was compounded with her breakup with Justin.

Britney took the next year off, but continued to cause controversy. In 2003, she made an appearance on the MTV Video Music Award show where she and Madonna shared the famous kiss that had everyone talking.

Her next album, In the Zone, was released in November 2003, and once again, topped the Billboard charts. The single, “Toxic,” won a Grammy for Best Dance Recording. Then, while visiting Vegas in January 2004, she got married on the spur of the moment to her childhood friend Jason Alexander. The marriage lasted only two days before Britney had it annulled. Soon after this, she cancelled her Onyx Hotel Tour. Now the paparazzi really had their eyes on Britney, and things only got worse when she began a relationship and before long married her backup dancer, Kevin Federline. Their reality television show, Britney and Kevin: Chaotic, celebrated the couple’s dysfunctions when it was debuted in 2005.

In 2005, Britney released Greatest Hits: My Prerogative. Her son, Sean Preston, was born in September, and immediately, the paparazzi began their quest to capture candid moments between mother and son. They were not disappointed. Several incidents were captured on film, including one photo of Britney speeding away from Starbucks with the baby on her lap. When Britney allegedly dropped Sean Preston from his highchair, the accident resulted in a visit from social services. Gossip was quickly spreading about Britney and Kevin’s dysfunctional marriage, and insiders said they were having heated arguments and that Kevin was sleeping in the basement.

Despite her complaints about invasion of privacy, Britney announced her second pregnancy in May 2006, on The Late Show with David Letterman. In June, she appeared on Dateline with Matt Lauer, professing her love for her husband, and tearfully begging the press to leave her alone.
Her second son, Jayden James Federline, was born on September 12, 2006. And in early November, Britney filed for divorce from Kevin, citing irreconcilable differences. The two are currently battling for custody of their two children. Since filing for divorce, Britney has been spotted staying out late and partying with other celebrities such as Paris Hilton.
In 2007 Britney has faced the most annus horribilus ever, (to qoute a phrase usedby Queen Elizabeth II) in her bid to keep hold of her children. In February Spears went to a haircutting studio in Tarazana, California, and shaved her hair off with clippers while the press looked on followed by a stint in rehab.
Britney was ordered to undergo random drug and alcohol testings and to attend parenting counseling and finally in October 2007 she lost custody of her two children with the court ruling that Kevin Federline will keep full custody of the children.
Britney continues to try and get her life back on track in an attempt to regain custody of her children. But in the meantime, on June 19th 2008 Britney became an aunt for the first time to her sister's baby. Maddie Briann who was born at Mississippi Southwest Regional Medical Center in McComb, Mississippi. The baby, who weighed 7 lb 11 oz is the the child of Jamie Lynn Spears and her long time boyfriend, Casey Aldridge.
